Echinacea isn’t the only winter remedy!![]() Several herbs can be combined with Echinacea to offer faster relief from symptoms such as congestion, or boost aspects of the immune system that Echinacea does not affect. Plantain has a whole host of benefits, including anti bacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, anticatarrhal, local anti-inflammatory, expectorant and demulcent actions. Many of these make plantain a specific herb for those with a bad ‘head cold’, easing discomfort of the mucous membranes of the ear, nose and throat. Elder berries stimulate the immune system and have anticatarrhal and local anti-inflammatory action, especially good for heavier colds and flu that involve deafness and sinusitis. Test-tube research has shown Elder berry may stimulate production of an interferon-like substance in human immune cells. Interferon inhibits the growth of viruses. ![]() ![]() Garlic has anti bacterial, anti viral and anti fungal properties that make it a perfect remedy for treating a wide variety of infectious conditions. Garlic is effective in killing many of the infectious bacteria that no longer respond to antibiotics, by stopping them from multiplying. Most of the sulphur compounds garlic contains will kill a variety of viruses, including Para influenza type 3 and Influenza B virus, according to research. Goldenseal is a popular herb that is often combined with Echinacea. Goldenseal is an anti-infective, stopping infections binding to host cells, and stimulates the spleen, which filters organisms from the blood. It also exhibits broad range antibiotic activity and has the ability to lower fevers. When combined with Echinacea’s immune boosting properties it is an ideal remedy for acute infections. Goldenseal’s powerful anti-microbial actions are complimented by an astringent effect in the gut, making it also the herb of choice for tummy bugs. |
